About us

Who we are

We’re a bunch of change-makers on a mission: to give every child a shot at a brighter future

Based in Gqeberha, South Africa, Hands of Compassion is a Christian, community-driven non-profit organisation supporting children, youth, and families where it’s needed most.

We were founded with a heart to respond to the real needs we see around us — where many families face poverty, food insecurity, unsafe living conditions and limited opportunities for children and young people.

Our mission is to bring practical support, hope, and long-term change through compassion, care, and consistent community programmes.

At Hands of Compassion, we believe in caring for the whole person — body, mind and spirit. When children receive nutritious food, emotional support, education, and positive guidance, they are better equipped to grow, learn, and build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.

Through our programmes, we seek to strengthen families, empower young people, and contribute to healthier and more hopeful communities across the Eastern Cape.

How it started

In areas such as Walmer Airport Valley and Rocklands, many children grow up facing daily challenges such as hunger, poverty, and limited access to safe spaces for learning and play.

Through our partner church, Bethel Ministries, which is located in the Walmer community, we began to see these struggles up close. As we spent time with families and children in the area, it became clear how great the need was — not only for food, but also for encouragement, support, and safe spaces where young people could grow.

Hands of Compassion began with a simple desire: to respond to the needs of children and families in our local community.

What started as small acts of care — sharing meals, supporting children, and simply being present in the community — slowly grew into something bigger. Step by step, these moments developed into a community initiative with the vision of bringing lasting hope and positive change.

Today, Hands of Compassion continues to grow through the dedication of volunteers, the support of community partners, and the generosity of donors who share the same vision: to see children thrive and communities strengthened.
